MONOTYPE

Unlike other forms of printing that can be controlled, Monotype carries the element of chance making Sarah's painterly style of printing with watercolour, spontaneous and exciting. The image only reveals itself after its journey through the press.

Sarah Nelson

Following a BA in Theatre Design at The Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design, Sarah worked as
a set and costume designer in theatre before moving into live youth TV for Planet 24, working as Art
Director for The Big Breakfast and The Word.

‘I love being creative, I try to work instinctively and quickly, keeping a controlled feeling of
energy and not overworking a piece.’ I paint mainly in ink and watercolour and I enjoy the fluidity
of this medium. I also combine the two in my monoprinting. Watercolour can be very expressive,
colours run and bleed into each other, results can be unexpected.

Sarah finds inspiration everywhere: washing on a line, driving on a motor way, in architecture,
and has a particular passion for industrial and farm buildings, finding beauty in the fading
colours of the corrugations.

Everything creates a shape and an interaction with the landscape. How a roof intersects the
sky, the swoop of a road. This creates drama and I am excited at the thought of expressing this
in my work. I try to capture the light and the textures of the wide open spaces that surround me.
Sarah lives in Rye, East Sussex
